Life-stage × jurisdiction trace-mineral matrix (dog & cat adult maintenance)
Minimum (and where given, maximum) trace-mineral levels for adult maintenance, compiled from the parsed cross-standard index and the NIAS 2024 standard. The three standards use different native units, so all values are reconciled to mg/kg DM (selenium to µg/kg DM) for comparison:
- AAFCO 2026 (US):
mg/kg DMdirectly (selenium alsomg/kg DM). - FEDIAF 2025 (EU):
mgorµg per 100 g DM(Table III-3a, "Unit per 100 g dry matter") —
converted to mg/kg DM (or µg/kg DM) by ×10; the mgkg_dm key name is a label artefact, the verbatim value is per 100 g DM.
- NIAS 2024 (KR):
mgor㎍ per 100 g DM(표 2-17b dog 성견, 표 2-17f cat 성묘) — converted
to mg/kg DM (or µg/kg DM) by ×10.
Every numeric cell is a verbatim value of the named source JSON (the ×10 figures are explicitly labelled conversions). Cells not set by a standard are honest gaps, never interpolated.
Dog — adult maintenance (reconciled to mg/kg DM; Se to µg/kg DM)
| Mineral | AAFCO 2026 min | AAFCO max | FEDIAF 2025 min | FEDIAF max | NIAS 2024 min | NIAS max |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iron | 40 | — | 36 (3.6×10) | — | 36 (3.60×10) | — |
| Copper | 7.3 | — | 7.2 (0.72×10) | — | 7.2 (0.72×10) | — |
| Manganese | 5.0 | — | 5.8 (0.58×10) | — | 5.0 (0.50×10) | — |
| Zinc | 80 | — | 72 (7.2×10) | — | 72 (7.20×10) | — |
| Iodine | 1.0 | 11.0 | 1.1 (0.11×10) | — | 1.0 (0.10×10) | 11.0 (1.10×10) |
| Selenium | 350 µg/kg (0.35 mg) | 2000 µg/kg (2.0 mg) | 180 µg/kg (18×10, dry) | — | 180 µg/kg (18.0×10) | 2000 µg/kg (200×10) |
Dog trace-mineral minimums are remarkably tight across all three standards — iron, copper, zinc and iodine agree within ~10 %, manganese within ~16 %. FEDIAF sets no maximums in these adult-maintenance slices (only minimums; the EU legal limit applies separately).
Cat — adult maintenance (reconciled to mg/kg DM; Se to µg/kg DM)
| Mineral | AAFCO 2026 min | AAFCO max | FEDIAF 2025 min | FEDIAF max | NIAS 2024 min | NIAS max |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iron | 80.0 | — | 80 (8.0×10) | — | 80 (8.0×10) | — |
| Copper | 5.0 (extruded/canned) | — | 5.0 (0.5×10) | — | 5.0 (0.50×10) | — |
| Manganese | 7.6 | — | 5.0 (0.5×10) | — | 5.0 (0.50×10) | — |
| Zinc | 75.2 | — | 75 (7.5×10) | — | 75 (7.5×10) | — |
| Iodine | 0.6 | 9.0 | 1.3 (0.13×10) | — | 0.6 (0.06×10) | 11.0 (1.10×10) |
| Selenium | 300 µg/kg (0.3 mg) | — | 210 µg/kg (21×10, dry) | — | 210 µg/kg (21.0×10) | — |
Cat iron, copper and zinc are near-identical across the three standards. Manganese is the widest divergence — AAFCO 7.6 vs FEDIAF/NIAS 5.0 mg/kg DM (~50 % higher under AAFCO). Iodine minimum also differs: FEDIAF 1.3 vs AAFCO/NIAS 0.6 mg/kg DM. AAFCO sets no cat selenium maximum; NIAS sets none for the cat either.
Method & honest-gap notes

(iron/copper/manganese/zinc/iodine mg/kg DM, selenium mg/kg DM; iodine/selenium also carry *_max_*) and fediaf_2025_summary.lifestages (dog adult nutrients_110kcal, cat adult nutrients_100kcal; iron/copper/manganese/zinc/iodine_min_mgkg_dm, selenium_min_ugkg_dm_dry); plus pdf-parsed/kr-2026/korea_nias_nutrient_standard.json tables 표 2-17b (dog 성견) and 표 2-17f (cat 성묘).
- Unit reconciliation (resolves the gap flagged in
life_stage_nutrient_matrix_vitamins):
AAFCO reports trace minerals per kg DM; FEDIAF and NIAS per 100 g DM. Because percent = g/100 g and mg/100 g ×10 = mg/kg, the ×10 conversion is exact, making the three columns directly comparable. Selenium differs only in the mass unit (AAFCO mg/kg DM vs FEDIAF/NIAS µg/100 g DM), reconciled to µg/kg DM by the same ×10.
- FEDIAF maximums: FEDIAF publishes only minimums in these adult-maintenance slices (the EU
legal limit, e.g. iodine 1.10 mg/100 g DM, applies separately) — recorded as honest gaps in the max columns, not as zeros.
- Cat copper (NIAS): listed as
copper (dry feed)/copper (canned feed), both 0.50 mg/100 g
DM; treated as the single NIAS cat copper minimum (5.0 mg/kg DM).
- Growth / reproduction life stages are out of scope here (focus: adult maintenance).
- Reproduce: re-read the named index keys / NIAS table cells; each verbatim source number is a
substring/value of the source JSON, with the mg/kg DM (or µg/kg DM) figures labelled as ×10 of the verbatim per-100-g-DM value.
